Ann Stautberg, born in Houston in 1949, is an accomplished photographer whose artistic practice spans over 50 years. Her work is in the collections of the Grace Museum, Austin Museum of Art, El Paso Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, University of Houston, and many more. Here is a mixed media image, which is when an artwork is made with more than one medium or material, that measures over four feet high and wide. The image shows a leaf from a banana tree. A light source from the top left corner illuminates it, making the leaf’s veins and stem more apparent as everything else is shadowed. Inscriptions indicate that this photo was taken on August 6, 1988 in Dallas, TX while the image itself was printed in 1998. Note how the edges of the image seem incomplete; this is a silver gelatin print that Stautberg accentuated with translucent oil paint. This transforms the image from a photograph into a unique artwork that adds texture and tone to the original piece. Also note the inscription of “A/P” under the image; this image is an artist’s proof, or a test print often reserved for the artist’s own collection.
