Art has always adapted to meet the needs and desires of the artist, often resulting in unique artworks that create new experiences. For example, this piece is spray painted on bed linens stretched onto a frame. The content of the artwork is of an elder Black woman looking up to her left, clearly defined through her hair painted through a pattern of small gray and white dots, known as stippling, and shades of brown that imply a light source facing her left side. She is flanked on each side by white and red silhouettes, or side views. The bottom left has white stars surrounded by blue. The colors bear resemblance to the American flag’s red, white, and blue. The spray paint creates a rougher texture with dried drippings, clumps, and waves created by the folding of the linen. The style of the painting can be described as Expressionist, when an artwork prioritizes emotional perspective rather than being realistic. Why did the artist choose this way to create this artwork? Were they creating their own flag? How is this like the American flag? How is it different?
