In 2022, Houston City Council accepted 52 mayoral portraits into the Civic Art Collection after Hurricane Harvey damaged them, many of which were created before the establishment of the Civic Art Program in 1999. By formally accepting them into the Collection, the portraits can be maintained and conserved. Most of the portraits are reproductions of original paintings or photographs. Here is a portrait of Almeron Earl Amerman, Sr., the 42nd Mayor of Houston. Amerman, born in 1878 in Houston, was admitted to the Texas State Bar in 1899 and set up a private practice. Amerman then served as Harris County Judge from 1907-1913, during which he oversaw the construction of the 1910 Courthouse. He was elected Mayor in 1918 in a special election and reelected for a full term. During his tenure, he motorized the fire department, instituted traffic police on Main Street, and established the City Market. He died in 1958.
