John Kirby Allen, born 1810, and Augustus Chapman Allen, born 1806, are known as the Allen Brothers. They founded the City of Houston three years after moving to Texas, from New York, in 1836. Financed by Augustus' wife, Charlotte, the Allen Brothers purchased 6,600 acres along the Buffalo Bayou for $5,000. They named their townsite after General Sam Houston to convince him to establish his namesake city as the future capital of Texas. John died in 1838 in Houston while Augustus died in 1864 in Washington, DC. These two bronze statues of the brothers, approximately five feet and six inches high, are in front of City Hall on each side of the entrance. To the left is Augustus who holds a hat in his right hand and metal fly stakes in his left. To the right is John who holds a cane in his right hand and a scroll, perhaps plans or a map, in his left. Note how the sculptor, Lori Betz, gave each brother unique details. Can you find them? The statues were initially commissioned for City Hall in 1939, even having platforms built for them, but the city ran short of funding; they were finally donated by the Oran M. Roberts Chapter, 440, of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 2015.
