Thomas “Tommy” Gregory, born in Houston in 1980, is a sculptor, arts administrator, and curator who has served as the Public Art Program Director and Curator for the Houston Airport System and currently the Public Art Senior Manager for the Port of Seattle. His artworks have been exhibited at the Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum, Lawndale Arts Center, University of Tennessee, and more. Here is one of his sculptures that measures five inches high, six inches wide, and 11 inches deep. It is made of cast bronze, which means that molten bronze was poured into a mold and cooled. The bronze is in the shape of a baseball cap with the Houston Astros logo on the front with a big H on a star. Note the details in the bronze, such as the texture of the fabric, stitching, logos, and indentation in the back of the hat. This could be considered an example of hyperrealism, a genre of art that recreates real life details with precision so that the artwork seems like the thing it is representing. However, the bronze surface gives the hat’s material away.
