Anahuac Wildlife Reserve, Chambers County, Texas

Geoff Winningham, born in Jackson, Tennessee in 1943, is a photographer, journalist, and filmmaker who has received two Guggenheim Fellowships, five grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and more. Here is a landscape photograph in the form of an archival inkjet print on 100% cotton rag media paper that measures over two feet high and four-and-a-half feet wide. Specifically, this is a photograph of the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, renamed the Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge as of March 4, 2025, in southeast Texas’s Gulf Coast. It is a wildlife conservation area established in 1963 that protects over 37,000 acres of coastal marsh and prairies that hosts various species of waterfowl, American alligators, bobcats, butterflies, red wolves, turtles, and more. The photograph captures the vibrant green flora of the refuge, including the willow thicket tree and longspike tridens or sideoats grama plants, the stalks with seed concentrations at the top, on the left. Eastern gamagrass and/or bushy bluestem, the taller tufts of grass, are on the right. This is part of a series, a collection of works that share a theme, style, or technique, of eight images by Winningham that represent the vastness and diversity of the Texas Gulf Coast.
