This illustration by British-born artist Louis John Rhead is for a book of fiction by British preacher John Bunyan published in 1680 titled “The Life and Death of Mr. Badman.” The book is a conversation between two men about the life of a sinner meant to teach Christians to avoid evil behavior. Rhead immigrated to the US in 1883 to be a poster artist. He provided illustrations for a reprint of the book in the 19th century, over 200 years later. This piece was originally drawn with India ink, a simple black colored ink known for its richness, able to be used with a brush or pen. Here, the main character of the book, Mr. Badman, wields a knife in rage as he scares off a woman and her child. Meanwhile, a devil smiles, seemingly whispering into Mr. Badman’s ear. While the focal point of the panel is the devil’s foot sparking fire, the darkness in the background contains various ominous figures: a blindfolded person holding scales; an angel with an hourglass and scythe; a corpse playing a pan flute; a woman tied to a stake; demons wrestling with people. What do they mean?
