Angle of Variance, Angle of Incidence (2016)

Shawn Camp, born in Idaho in 1971, earned an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and is a professor of painting at Austin Community College. His artworks have been exhibited at the Rockport Center for the Arts, Texas A&M University, ICOSA Gallery, and more. Here are two separate pieces by Camp that measure five-and-a-half feet high and 10 feet wide combined. They are both made with acrylic paint on wood panels. The artwork on the left is titled “Angle of Variance” and made of two wood panels cut into trapezoids and bolted together. The artwork on the right is titled “Angle of Incidence” and made of three wood panels cut into trapezoids and bolted together. Can you see how each piece is similar and different from the other? Camp made each artwork by applying layers of glazes to the wood and sanding portions down between coats. Note how each artwork seems like a piece of the sky. Camp said: “I make paintings, videos, light and sound pieces that explore the boundary between the physical and the transcendent… Through translucence and refraction, the shimmering surfaces convey a sense of atmosphere and explore the mystery of light, matter, and space.”

La obra situada a la izquierda lleva por título “Ángulo de Varianza” y se compone de dos paneles de madera cortados en forma de trapecio y unidos mediante pernos. La obra de la derecha se titula “Ángulo de Incidencia” y está compuesta por tres paneles de madera cortados en forma de trapezoide y unidos mediante pernos. ¿Logra observar cómo cada obra tiene similitudes y diferencias con el otro? Camp creó cada obra aplicando capas de veladuras sobre la madera y lijando ciertas zonas entre capa y capa. Observe cómo cada obra evoca la imagen de un fragmento del cielo. Camp afirmó: “Realizo pinturas, videos, y piezas de luz y sonido que exploran la frontera entre lo físico y lo trascendente...
