Arm Circlet– Rays (2003)

Arm circlets are jewelry pieces that go around the bicep; arm circlets have been used in different cultures around the world, such as ancient Greece, Egypt, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and more. Here is an art circlet by Sandra Zilker made of sterling silver with inserts made of papier mâché, polymer clay, and colored with pigment. The flourishes around the armlet resemble shards or teeth of different sizes that point outward. The title hints that they may be the rays of the sun, making the bicep the sun itself. Measuring five inches in diameter, would you wear this? The jeweler, Zilker, has taught at the Glassell School of Art in 1974, becoming their department head of jewelry/enamel and the associate dean of student activities. Zilker was named a Texas Master Artist in 2014 by the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and her work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Racine Art Museum; Designmuseo, Finland; and Norden Felske Kundi Industrimuseum, Norway. Zilker once said of her work: “Structural boundaries reflect personal needs… Imagery reflects recurring and current concerns.”

Los brazaletes son piezas de joyería que se colocan alrededor del brazo. Los brazaletes se han utilizado en diversas culturas de todo el mundo, como las de la antigua Grecia, Egipto, Indonesia, y Sri Lanka, entre otras. Aquí se presenta un brazalete de Sandra Zilker, hecha de plata de ley con inserciones de papel maché, arcilla polimérica, y coloreada con pigmento. Las florituras alrededor del brazalete se asemejan a fragmentos o dientes de diferentes tamaños que apuntan hacia afuera. El título sugiere que podrían ser los rayos del sol, convirtiendo el brazo en el sol mismo. Con 12,7 cm de diámetro, ¿te la pondrías? La joyera Zilker impartió clases en la Escuela de Arte Glassell en 1974, donde se convirtió en jefa del departamento de joyería y esmalte y decana adjunta de actividades estudiantiles.
