Arnold and Etta Hillendahl

Portraits are a genre of paintings that represent specific people. Here, an oil painting portrait by Nell Pearson shows an elder couple posing together. The elder couple is Arnold Louis and Henrietta V “Etta” Williams Hillendahl, members of the notable Hillendahl family. Arnold’s grandfather Wilhelm Heinrich August Hillendahl, a German immigrant, was one of the first settlers of the Spring Branch area of Houston alongside other German families, founding its first post office and St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Hillendahls maintained their farming practices for generations until Arnold and Etta Hillendahl sold their land due to rising property taxes. To this day, many things in Houston bear the Hillendahl name, such as Hillendahl Boulevard, the Hillendahl Neighborhood Library, and the Hillendahl Cemetery, which is the final resting place for 19 Hillendahls; the cemetery is registered with the city, county, and state, protecting it from ever being moved. Arnold and Etta Hillendahl stand close together, bearing modest smiles against a calming, blue background while warmly looking at the viewer.
