About the Artwork:
Atramentite (2013)
by Megan Harrison

In ancient Rome, atramentum referred to any black coloring substance; as a suffix, or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning, adding -ite can change a word to refer to a rock or mineral. Artist Megan Harrison combined the two words to create Atramentite for a series of artworks as a geologic interpretation of ink. Here is one piece that measures five feet high and 10 feet wide and made with ink and acrylic on paper. It features a mineral deposit and/or structure of the fictional atramentum, showing it as a euhedral crystal formation, or when minerals have flat faces and sharp angles since their growth has not been interfered with, of rectangular prisms. As well, the atramentite seems to be a moon-like material with a gray surface and craters. To make this artwork, Harrison described it as: “Through the application of dark ink on wet paper, one can witness its movement, shifting in ways suggestive of galactic events, star formations and cosmic weather…” Note how the craters seem like ink spots and the grays flow like liquid. Even though the artwork is large, is this a molecular sized image?

Atramentita (2013)
