Being Caressed By A Cactus... (2006)

Richard “Ricky” Armendariz, born in El Paso in 1969, is a professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio and has work in the permanent collections of the San Antonio Museum of Art, McNay Art Museum, Denver Art Museum, the Cheech Marin Collection, and more. Here is one of his mixed media pieces, or when an artwork is made with more than one material or medium, that measures four feet high and eight feet long. It is an oil painting on plywood that has been carved. The painting features a landscape, when an artwork shows natural scenery, of plains with hills and trees and a blue sky full of clouds; some of the clouds are in the shape of mountains. The carvings show an elephant, an alligator, a crocodile, and lyrics to an original song by Armendariz that read: “Being caressed by a cactus, / will leave you with a calloused heart…” Armendariz said the lyrics seem like a: “truism what you might hear from your Mother or Grandmother... These materials and images compliment the Southwestern mystique and reaffirm Americans attraction to Western art that is firmly rooted in the border culture of the Southwest.”
