Belle Sherman Kendall Branch Houston Public Library

Architects provide illustrations of designs to give clients an idea of how the final building would appear. This architectural illustration is by John Hatteberg, Jr., one of three architects of Alexander, Walton & Hatteberg, using gouache paints on paper to show the design of the Belle Sherman Kendall Branch of the Houston Public Library. The single-story building is surrounded by trees and the wide-open sky while people go through an entrance beneath an awning. The illustration matches the final building, which opened on January 21, 1969 on 14330 Memorial Drive, including the library name in sans serif font along the side facing the street. The library is named for Belle Sherman Kendall, a civic leader born in Harrisburg, TX in 1847 before it was formally annexed into Houston. Sherman Kendall moved to Houston in 1878 where she was a founding member of the Woman's Club of Houston, which secured funds from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to establish the city’s first public library building which would develop into the Houston Public Library system. The library would move two miles away into a three-story center at 609 N. Eldridge in 2010 while this building became a facility for Spring Branch Independent School District.
