In 2022, Houston City Council accepted 52 mayoral portraits into the Civic Art Collection after Hurricane Harvey damaged them, many of which were created before the establishment of the Civic Art Program in 1999. By formally accepting them into the Collection, the portraits can be maintained and conserved. Most of the portraits are reproductions of original paintings or photographs. Here is a portrait of Benjamin Campbell, the 39th Mayor of Houston. Shortly after Campbell’s birth in Maringo County, AL in 1858, his family moved to Walker County, TX in 1859. Campbell studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1882, serving as county attorney for Walker County and district attorney for the Twelfth Judicial District of Texas. In 1883, Campbell moved to Houston to join a law firm. In 1913, Campbell was elected Mayor and served two terms. During his tenure, Campbell oversaw: construction of a sewage disposal plant for the City; improvements of drainage systems and streets; development of the city park system, including Hermann Park; establishment of the first civil service system and the eight-hour workday for city employees; providing free textbooks for school children; and the opening of the Port of Houston. He died in 1942.
