Michael Kennaugh, born in Wyoming in 1964, is a painter whose work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Tyler Museum of Art, Mobile Museum of Art, Lamar University, and more. He is known for his abstract paintings and sculptures that use geometric and/or oblong shapes to create complex yet unified scenes of flowing colors. Here is an example of Kennaugh’s aesthetic that measures nearly two feet high, one foot long, and 14 inches deep. The sculpture is made of a wooden base board half painted black with abstract shapes sprouting up from it. One of the shapes is half painted grey and black with the grey portion being one part round and the other triangular; the black portion has three sharp corners. What other shapes do you see? Abstract art is when a piece moves away from reality to play with shapes and forms to invite viewers to come to their own interpretations.
