About the Artwork:
Blue Eyed Grass - Not A True Grass (2011)
by Page Kempner

Sculptor Page Kempner, born in Houston in 1961, has been featured at: the Nave Museum in Victoria, TX; Galveston Arts Center; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; Tyler Museum of Art; the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, OK; and more. Regarding her practice, Kempner said: “I work directly in wax, and a foundry casts my originals in bronze… The foundry casts the waxes and sandblasts the bronzes, I then add color…” Here is an example of a sculpture where it seems that molten bronze was poured into a wax mold and detailed with gesso, graphite, crayon, and acrylic. Measuring about six inches high, five inches wide, and three inches deep, the sculpture takes the form of a white paper house drawn with the common blue-eyed grass in pen. Note the “crumpling” and “wrinkling” effects throughout, as well as the folding of the “paper.” This can be considered as an example of hyperrealism, a genre of art that recreates real life details with precision so that the artwork seems like the thing it is representing. As in, would the viewer know this wasn’t a paper house? The title plays with this idea, referring to how blue-eyed grass, a flower bush, is not actually grass.
