Heidi Gerstacker is a German-born and Houston-based artist known for her jewelry using various metals. This piece is a ring mostly made with sterling silver, which is an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals; because silver is prone to tarnishing, or corrosion that darkens the surface, other metals can increase resistance, hardness, and strength. As well, silver is a precious metal and has been used as currency throughout human history. However, at the head of the ring is a found bottle cap, probably made of aluminum or steel. Consider the juxtaposition, or when opposing things are seen together, of an average bottle cap and a ring of sterling silver, the clash of precious versus common. Also, the ring is set into a small container of dirt like a ring box, as though it can be found on the ground. Why do you think the artist plays with the ideas of valuable and invaluable?
