Geoff Winningham, born in Jackson, Tennessee in 1943, is a photographer, journalist, and filmmaker who has received two Guggenheim Fellowships, five grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and published 15 books and completed three documentary films. He moved to Houston in 1961 to study at Rice University before joining its art department in 1969 to teach. Here is a carbon pigment ink print of one of his black-and-white photographs on aluminum Dibond, a material made of two sheets of thin aluminum bonded to a solid polyethylene core. It measures over two-and-a-half foot high and eight feet wide. The image shows a row of trees, perhaps cedar elms, that lean towards Buffalo Bayou and have their roots exposed. Note how the darkness of the tree trunks contrast with the lightness of the bayou water, creating a complex layering composition in the image with a fixed perspective, essentially placing the viewer in the photo. As well, this photograph is in conversation with two other images by Winningham of Buffalo Bayou within the Civic Art Collection, this image being furthest from downtown in west Houston. The photo was taken between 1997-2001 and published in Winningham’s book “Along Forgotten River” in 2003.

Observe cómo la oscuridad de los troncos de los árboles contrasta con la claridad del agua del pantano, creando una compleja composición de capas en la imagen con una perspectiva fija, que esencialmente sitúa al espectador en la foto.
