Painter Aaron Parazette, born in southern California in 1960, moved to Houston in 1990 to be a Core Fellow at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston before becoming a professor at the University of Houston in 1997. Parazette was named Art League Houston’s Texas Artist of the Year in 2012 and has received the Artadia Fund for Art and Design and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. Here is one of his acrylic and enamel paintings on canvas that measures six-and-a-half feet high and six feet wide. It is part of a series, a collection of works that share a theme, style, or technique, exhibited in 2002. The series explores surfing, skating, and snowboarding, and this painting’s title may be a reference to the Carver brand of skateboards. The painting itself mainly features a swooping white loop that begins and ends off canvas; the loop covers three horizontal layers, from top to bottom, of pink, black, and yellow. The loop may be a representation of a 360-cess slide, when a skater slides their board in a 360 circle while still moving forward, or a 360 air out, when a skater turns 360 degrees while in the air, as the colors may be the ramp.
