Central Library City of Houston

This is a poster-sized print of an original work by S.I. Morris of the Central Library of the City of Houston. Morris’ firm is also known for many of Houston’s major buildings, such as The Astrodome, The Wortham Theater, Glassell School of Art, and others. This building was constructed in 1975, open to the public in 1976, and would serve as the central library for the City of Houston. This print must have been made before the building was named the Jesse H. Jones Central Branch Library in 1989, even bearing the name of Louie Welch, Mayor of Houston from 1964 to 1974, on the bottom right corner. To the left of the library appears to be the Julia Ideson Building, formerly the Houston Public Library’s headquarters. Note the cars, which seem to be manufactured by the Ford Motor Company, as well as people and oaks trees throughout the piece. How much has changed? How much has remained the same?
