City Hall Exterior Bas-Reliefs

Sculptors Matchett Herring Coe and Raoul Jean Josset collaborated on these 27 bas relief works, which are sculptures made by carving a design that slightly rises from its material, made from limestone around the exterior of Houston’s City Hall. Coe was born in Loeb (now Lumberton), TX in 1907 and died in 1999. He has artworks all over Houston, such as at Rice University and the Houston Zoo. Josset was born in 1899 in France and died in 1957 in Dallas, TX. He moved to Texas after participating in the Texas Centennial in 1936, creating various historical monuments all over Texas, such as in Gonzales, Refugio, Dallas, and more. Each relief features a different theme above the first, fourth, and tenth-floor windows, such as agriculture, industry, and government, respectively. For example, one relief shows a woman picking fruit and another shows a man carrying stalks of wheat; a relief shows a man carrying a cog while another shows a man turning a wrench; on the top level are reliefs showing a mother protecting a child from lightning and another shows people studying a globe. As well, there are special reliefs above the entrance, showing two men taming a wild horse, and along the parapet on the edge of the roof, a series of wildcat heads.
