City of Houston, 1964

This photograph of Houston’s downtown skyline is a chromogenic photograph, created through a process where a chromogenic paper, containing layers of chemicals, is exposed to wavelengths of colored light through a film negative; then, the paper is run through a machine with dyes that react with the light-activated chemicals to color the image. This photo is by Bob Bailey Photographic Productions, a commercial photography studio opened in 1929 that took over 500,000 pictures of life in Houston from the 1930s through the 1990s. This birds-eye view of Houston’s downtown was taken in 1964, the camera facing eastward. On the left is Houston’s iconic City Hall with I-45 and Allen Parkway below it. The bottom right features the edge of Fourth Ward, a historically African American neighborhood; in the 70s, many families would be displaced to expand the highway and build complexes. For example, the Allen Center would later be constructed in 1972 near the center right of this photo. What other buildings do you recognize? Which are missing? The picture also has a dedication and signature from former Houston Mayor Oscar Holcombe in the bottom left over Buffalo Bayou.
