Cleanliness is next to Hot Rodliness (2007)

Katie Pell, born in Delaware in 1965 and died in 2019 in San Antonio, is known for her drawings, sculptures, and mixed media works and teaching at the Southwest School of Art, Northwest Vista College, and the University of Texas at San Antonio. In 2006, Pell had an exhibition at Artpace in San Antonio titled “Bitchen” that showed “a parallel universe in which women use their disposable income to customize domestic appliances…” This sculpture, measuring nearly four feet high, one-and-a-half feet wide, and one foot deep, was featured in the exhibition. It is a vintage Electrolux vacuum, a Swedish model originally made in the 1950s, whose body has been painted with a muscle car-like aesthetic and polished to a chrome-like sheen while the hose is covered in a deluxe fabric. One side of the vacuum reads “Cleanliness” while the other side reads “Hot Rodliness.” This is a play on the phrase: “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” Pell said: “I think the familiarity of the object and the beauty of the decoration are enticing, and the seeming absurdity of customizing domestic objects from the kitchen can be a passing giggle or a great conversation.”

Katie Pell, nacida en Delaware en 1965 y fallecida en 2019 en San Antonio, es conocida por sus dibujos, esculturas, y obras de técnica mixta, así como por su labor docente en la Southwest School of Art, el Northwest Vista College, y la Universidad de Texas en San Antonio. En 2006, Pell presentó una exhibición en el Artpace en San Antonio titulada “Bitchen” que mostraba “un universo paralelo en el que las mujeres utilizan sus ingresos disponibles para personalizar los electrodomésticos...” Esta escultura, que mide casi cuatro pies de alto, un pie y medio de ancho, y un pie de profundidad, formó parte de dicha exposición. Se trata de una aspiradora Electrolux antiguo, un modelo sueco fabricado originalmente en la década de 1950, cuyo cuerpo ha sido pintado con una estética al estilo de los automóviles deportivos y pulido hasta adquirir un brillo similar al del cromo, mientras que la manguera está revestida de una tela de lujo. En un lado de la aspiradora se lee “Cleanliness” o “Limpieza” mientras que en el otro se lee “Hot Rodliness” o “De Estilo Hot Rod.” Se trata de un juego de palabras basado en la frase: “La limpieza está cerca de la divinidad.” Pell dijo: “Creo que la familiaridad del objeto y la belleza de su decoración resultan atractivas. Además, la aparente absurdidad de personalizar objetos domésticos de la cocina puede provocar una risa pasajera o dar pie a una gran conversación.”
