Within the Houston Permitting Office is a wall installation, which means the artwork is site-specific and transforms the space, that measures one foot high and over 16 feet wide. The installation is made of 12 individual pieces of acrylic panels, colored in purple, red, blue, orange, yellow, and green, each in the shape of a hand in different poses. Together, the hands are showing words and phrases in American Sign Language grouped by colors. The hands are signing the title phrase of the artwork: “Code spoken here with skill, nuance and great authority.” Part of a series of nine artworks, Mary Margaret Hansen organized a team of local artists and designers to reveal the purpose and function of the building through art. In this case, it seems to be highlighting the permitting center’s authority over building codes and laws. Hansen is a Houston-based artist and writer whose art has been exhibited at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, DiverseWorks, Houston Center for Photography, and more.
