An installation is a genre of three-dimensional, site-specific art that transforms the space in which it is in which can be temporary or permanent. This installation by light designer Michael John Smith is in the McGovern-Stella Link Neighborhood Library located within the Braeswood Place neighborhood of Houston, TX. Smith owns MJS Lighting Consultants, founded in 1982, and is the first independent architectural lighting practice in Houston; he has consulted on over 750 projects in the United States, Mexico, Europe, and the Middle East. This 13-foot-in-diameter work has two key elements: the first is the cylindrical, chainmail screen hanging from a circular framework; the second is the LED lighting system projecting light downward from the circular framework. The installation encircles a table and chairs, making a workspace that is both enclosed yet open since the chainmail is wide enough to let viewers see inside. When the room is dark, the LED lights create a ghostly halo around the table and chairs that is contained by the chainmail but still reflects on the metal screen and ground.
