Terry Allen, born in Kansas in 1943, who grew up in Lubbock, Texas. He is an accomplished singer and songwriter with 14 albums of Texas country music and visual artist with works in the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, the Contemporary Austin, and many more. This over 20-foot-tall bronze sculpture, located in Bush Intercontinental Airport, of a tree, perhaps a cedar elm, chosen from fellow sculptor James Surls’ estate. The bronze tree stands inside a terrazzo and bronze floor mosaic showing a map of the world where Houston is the center. As well, music plays from above the tree, which is a soundtrack of 18 original country and western songs by Terry Allen, Joe Ely, and David Byrne. The tree is said to weight 2100 pounds and was cast by the Walla Walla Foundry in Washington state.
