Paul Kittelson, born in Minnesota in 1959, earned an MFA from the University of Houston in 1985 where he later served on the faculty of its School of Art starting in 1992. Kittelson has other artworks within the Civic Art Collection, often in collaboration with his wife Carter Ernst whom he met while in the graduate program at UH, such as “Take-Off” in Bush Intercontinental Airport and “Heritage Lanterns” in Root Memorial Square Park. Here is one of Kittelson’s solo artworks that is a sculpture measuring two feet high, one foot and a half long, and two inches deep. It seems to represent a thin slice of gouda cheese, evidenced by the red exterior and porous interior. This can be considered as an example of hyperrealism, a genre of art that recreates real life details with precision so that the artwork seems like the thing it is representing. Would you know this was a sculpture and not a real slice of cheese without context? Why would an artist create an artwork that looks almost exactly like the real thing?

Paul Kittelson, nacido en Minnesota en 1959, obtuvo una Maestría en Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Houston en 1985 donde más tarde se incorporó a la facultad de su Escuela de Arte en 1992.
