Crow Aura (2012)

In various cultures and beliefs, crows hold different meanings. For example, the Hopi and Sioux people consider crows as spiritual guides that bring wisdom from ancestors; in Celtic beliefs, the crow symbolizes death and rebirth; and in Norse mythology, crows symbolize knowledge and memory. Sculptor Damon Thomas taps into these beliefs to create a ceramic sculpture that measures 18 inches high, 18 inches wide, and 11 inches deep. At the center of the sculpture is a bust, or a three-dimensional sculpture of a head and neck of a person, of a man with their eyes closed and mouth open. The bust is surrounded by 10 crows that seem to look toward the man as they fuse into his flesh. The sculpture is mainly blue, perhaps achieved by adding cobalt to the firing process, with white and green spots, giving the piece an earthly color theme. Are the crows bringing wisdom and memory to the man? What does his expression mean? Thomas also has works in the collections of the Armadillo Clay Company in Austin, TX; the International Women’s Foundation in Marfa, TX; and Marta Stafford Fine Art in Marble Falls, TX.

En diversas culturas y creencias, los cuervos tienen diferentes significados. Por ejemplo, los pueblos hopi y sioux los consideran guías espirituales que traen la sabiduría de sus antepasados; en las creencias celtas, simbolizan la muerte y el renacimiento; y en la mitología nórdica, simbolizan el conocimiento y la memoria. El escultor Damon Thomas se inspira en estas creencias para crear una escultura de cerámica de 45 cm de alto, 45 cm de ancho, y 28 cm de profundidad. En el centro de la escultura se encuentra un busto, o escultura tridimensional de la cabeza y el cuello de un hombre con los ojos cerrados y la boca abierta. El busto está rodeado por diez cuervos que parecen mirar al hombre mientras se funden con su carne. La escultura es principalmente azul, quizás lograda añadiendo cobalto al proceso de cocción, con manchas blancas y verdes que le dan a la obra un tono terroso. ¿Acaso los cuervos aportan sabiduría y recuerdos al hombre? ¿Qué significa su expresión? Thomas también tiene obras en las colecciones de Armadillo Clay Company en Austin, Texas; la Fundación Internacional de Mujeres en Marfa, Texas; y Marta Stafford Fine Art en Marble Falls, Texas.
