Fashion design refers to the art of design, aesthetics, construction, and beauty of clothing and accessories. Omar Angel Perez, born in Houston in 1963, created a series of stiletto heels, a shoe with a long, thin, high heel named after the stiletto dagger, that push the boundaries of fashion. Here is a stiletto heel made of rosewood with snakeskin insole and band-saw blades as straps that measures 13 inches high. Note how the ridges of the saw would push into the foot if this were to be worn. Perez said of this series: “As an expression of appreciation, I offer my gratitude to all women who endure the torture of wearing such heels. Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed.” What does it mean to create a work of fashion that cannot be worn without harming the wearer? The title, “Danika,” means ‘morning star’ in Slavic. Perez is a woodworker, having years of experience in building fine-craft furniture before winning an Emmy Award for excellence in broadcast graphics in 2004. His work has been featured in the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, American Craft Council Shows, the Fuller Craft Museum, and more.
