Photographer Paul Hester, born in Nashville, TN in 1948, first studied fine art at Rice University in the late 1960s before becoming a faculty member in the Department of Visual & Dramatic Arts for 15 years. His photographs reside in the: Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris; Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC; Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth; and more. Hester also gave 749 of his images of Houston, taken between 1978-1998, to the Houston Public Library. Here, he incorporated a series of his historic photographs of Market Square and downtown Houston into a four-sided pillar within Market Square Park. Printed on porcelain enamel in black and white, Hester’s photographs are mixed with historic photographs taken from newspapers and archives to document the history of Market Square Park from 1873-2009. Early photographs show how Market Square once hosted a city center in 1873, had a fire that destroyed buildings in 1901, and held city hall in 1904 before another fire destroyed buildings in 1960. Other sides of the pillar hold plaques that provide more context and history to the park, including an official Texas historical landmark marker.
