About the Artwork:
Don't Lie Bouquet (2006-2012)
by Karin Broker

Karin Broker, born in Pennsylvania in 1950, is a visual artist whose practice includes drawings, prints, and assemblage sculptures that can be found in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and more. Broker was a professor of drawing and printmaking at Rice University from 1980-2021 and named the Texas Artist of the Year by Art League Houston. Here is one of her sculptures that measures over three-and-a-half feet tall, one foot wide, and one foot deep made from different objects. Mainly, the sculpture features a vase with a pedestal base that is filled with flowers. The flowers have petals made of metal strips and pistils made of rhinestones, jewelry, and wire. Note how the vase and pedestal have drawings of symbols and writings that state “Don’t lie,” “thou shalt not lie,” and “no” repeatedly. As well, the vase has names written on it, such as “Pamela,” “Dave,” and “Wade,” amongst many others. What do these writings mean? The messy writing, rusty petals, and scratched vase contrast with the shiny gems, mixing beauty with imperfection.
