Liza Littlefield works in various mediums, including painting, drawing, and mixed media. Here is one of her mixed media pieces, when an artwork is made with more than one medium or material, that seems to be made of cut wood, paint, and perhaps graphite. It measures nearly two feet tall and over two feet wide. A panel of wood is cut into the shape of a bird’s head and painted with shades of brown, white, grey, yellow, and black. Specifically, this shows an Eastern Meadowlark, a blackbird that can be found all along the Texas coast, including Houston. The Eastern Meadowlark has a distinct song of a clear whistle that sounds like “see-you, sEEee-yerrrr.” They like to nest in open grasslands in the ground. Note the detail Littlefield has put into the meadowlark’s head, including the yellow plumage and various sizes of feathers. Have you seen this bird in Houston? You may have seen it closer to the coast alongside the Western Meadowlark.
