Kia Neill, born in Chicago in 1978, is a multi-disciplinary artist who works with photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, and more. Her public art has been featured at the Meow Wolf Convergence Station in Denver, Children’s Museum of Denver, the Town of Silverthorne, amongst others. Here is a mixed media piece by Neill, or when an artwork has more than one medium or material, made with graphite, acrylic, and ink on polypropylene paper (a waterproof, tear-resistant paper) that measures nine inches tall and six inches wide. The piece shows two translucent organic forms with shells towards the bottom. They seem to be inspired by micro-animals, such as tardigrades, annelids, and nematodes, that often require microscopes to see. Note the detail of the organism’s organs and shell types, such as the conch on the left and abalone on the right. Neill said: “I create simulations of nature while placing emphasis on embellishment so to produce seductive fantasized versions. In this, my aim is to create surreal forms that signify an evolving distorted interpretation of nature.” The title hints that this is part of a series, a collection of works that share a theme, style, or technique to create unified works.
