Nell Breyer, born in England in 1971, is an artist whose practice includes dance, new media, visual art, and video. Her artworks have been featured at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, National Academy of Arts & Sciences, Baryshnikov Art Center, Institute of Contemporary Art / Boston, and more. Here is one of her videos that is one minute and 17 seconds long made of excerpts from a video installation shown at Art Interactive in 2004 and the National Academy of Sciences in 2007. Some scenes show individual frames of mouths speaking, eyes blinking and moving, and a man’s side profile walking forward, all at the same time as to cause disorientation. Breyer said: “A conventional horizontal timeline is flipped so time is stacked and falls vertically. Our eye wants to read the progression simultaneously instead of in sequence, as a filmstrip or cartoon might be read.”
