This artwork used to be a functioning water fountain donated to the library in 1932 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, an American neo-Confederate association for female descendants of Confederate Civil War soldiers founded in 1894. The fountain is dedicated to Catholic priest Abram Joseph Ryan, born in Maryland in 1838 to Irish immigrants and died in Kentucky in 1886, who came to be known as the "Poet Laureate of the Confederacy." Ryan opposed abolition, supported white supremacy, and wrote poems that defended the legacy of the Confederacy. The marble bas relief, a sculpture made by carving a design that slightly rises from its material, shows a stack of books, which includes Ryan’s collected poetry and a copy of “History of the Confederacy” attributed seemingly to Confederate General Porter Alexander, next to a candle holder. The bas relief is signed by Penelope Lingan, a painter, sculptor, and teacher born in North Carolina in 1860 and died in Houston in 1943. The marble plaque includes a dedication to Ryan and four lines of his poetry that glorify a flag. The former fountain, currently in sixteen separate pieces, also includes a marble bowl and travertine, a form of limestone, framing.
