Houston Studio Glass is a glassblowing studio started in 1995 by married couple Katherine Poeppel and Richard Moiel after they retired from the medical field as an operating room nurse and neurological surgeon, respectively. Their work has been featured all over Houston and Texas, as well as in Louisiana and Missouri. Here is one of their cast glass works that measures 13 inches high, 13 inches wide, and seven inches deep. It appears to be made of two rectangular pieces that are interconnected like a chain link. The title, “Fettered,” means to be restrained with chains or shackles around the ankles. Note the texture and design of the artwork, making the piece seem like a plastic or rubber toy when it is glass, accompanied by the bright green and blue colors. For example, the surface has grooves and indentations to seem like the toy was set in a cast mold. Consider how the glass pieces were interlinked. Were they cast separately? Or at the same time? Glassblowing involves inflating molten glass into a bubble using a blowpipe, which is then molded using tools and slowly cooled.
