Within the Houston Permitting Office is a wall installation, which means the artwork is site-specific and transforms the space, that measures one foot high and over 16 feet wide. The installation is made of 11 individual pieces of acrylic panels, colored in green, light blue, red, purple, yellow, and dark blue, each in the shape of a hand in different poses. Together, the hands are showing words and phrases in American Sign Language grouped by colors. The hands are signing the title phrase of the artwork: “Fewer problems down the road if you solve the issues today.” Part of a series of nine artworks, Mary Margaret Hansen organized a team of local artists and designers to reveal the purpose and function of the building through art. In this case, it seems to be highlighting the permitting center’s inspections and approvals process that encourages people to address their building’s issues. Hansen is a Houston-based artist and writer whose art has been exhibited at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, DiverseWorks, Houston Center for Photography, and more.

Dentro de la Oficina de Permisos de Houston se encuentra una instalación mural, lo que significa que la obra de arte es específica del lugar y transforma el espacio. Esta instalación mide 30 cm de alto y más de 4,8 metros de ancho. La instalación consta de 11 paneles acrílicos individuales, coloreados en verde, azul claro, rojo, morado, amarillo, y azul oscuro, cada uno con la forma de una mano en diferentes poses. Juntas, las manos muestran palabras y frases en lenguaje de señas americano, agrupadas por colores. Las manos representan la frase que da título a la obra: “Menos problemas en el futuro si los resuelves hoy.” Como parte de una serie de nueve obras, Mary Margaret Hansen organizó un equipo de artistas y diseñadores locales para revelar el propósito y la función del edificio a través del arte. En este caso, parece que el arte muestra el proceso de inspección y aprobación del centro de permisos, que anima a las personas a abordar los problemas de sus edificios. Hansen es un artista y escritor residente en Houston, cuyas obras se han exhibido en el Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, DiverseWorks, el Houston Center for Photography, y otros lugares.
