About the Artwork:
Fishing at Allen's Landing on Buffalo Bayou (2001)
by Geoff Winningham

Geoff Winningham, born in Jackson, Tennessee in 1943, is a photographer, journalist, and filmmaker who has received two Guggenheim Fellowships, five grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and published 15 books and completed three documentary films. He moved to Houston in 1961 to study at Rice University before joining its art department in 1969 to teach, currently holding the Lynette S. Autrey Chair in the Humanities. Here is a carbon pigment ink print of one of his black-and-white photographs on aluminum Dibond, a material made of two sheets of thin aluminum bonded to a solid polyethylene core, that measures over two-and-a-half foot high and eight feet wide. The image shows a man and child sitting and fishing on the bank of Buffalo Bayou at Allen’s Landing, recognized as the official birthplace of the city in 1836. Note the juxtaposition, or when opposing things are seen together, of how trees surround the man, child, and bayou but the water’s surface reflecting a large building, University of Houston-Downtown, and an overpass. The image was taken between 1997-2001 and published in Winningham’s book “Along Forgotten River” in 2003.
