Sculptor Jim Love was born in Amarillo, TX in 1927 and moved to Houston in the early-1950s where he died in 2005. Love’s other public sculptures can be found throughout the Civic Art Collection, including “Portable Trojan Bear” in Hermann Park and “Call Ernie” at William P. Hobby Airport. Here is a cast bronze piece that measures 16 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 11 inches deep that seems to be a sculptural version of a still life, which is when a work of art shows things that do not move whether they are natural or human made. It is four flowers, perhaps daisies and lilies, in a spherical pot. As well, cast bronze means that molten bronze was poured into a mold. Love has various versions of flower sculptures, including at the Menil Collection, Rice University, and Museum of Fine Arts Houston, all of which are in different styles. This piece may be the most realistic of them all.
