K.C. Collins is a Houston-based artist who earned a BFA from the Pratt Institute and has had his works shown in: Brooklyn, NY; Newport, RI; Berlin, Germany; Austin, TX; Dallas, TX; San Antonio, TX; and more. Here is one of his paintings that measures three feet high and four feet wide in the form of a still life, which is when a work of art shows things that do not move. It shows a wide, blue pot with yellow zig zags holding various flowers, such as daisies and plants; the title hints that these flowers are on a brown, wooden casket, perhaps honoring a recently deceased person. This contrasts the image of life with death; still life is also known as naturaleza muerta. Collins’ painting style may be inspired by neo-expressionists, a style of painting from the late 1970s. Neo-expressionism is seen as a revival of the expressionist movement where figures are painted clearly but with emotional intensity, using rough brushstrokes and vivid colors to respond to minimalist and conceptual art. Note how Collins uses rough brushstrokes to allow layers underneath to show while the brightness of the bowl pops from the dark casket.
