K.C. Collins is a Houston-based artist who earned a BFA from the Pratt Institute and has had his works shown in: Brooklyn; Newport; Berlin; Austin; Dallas; San Antonio; and more. Here is one of his paintings that measures over two-and-a-half feet high and three feet wide in the form of a still life, which is when a work of art represents things that do not move. For example, this still life shows a blue pot containing various flowers and plants and a log on what seems to be a tile floor. The pot of flowers and the log contrast in how they are painted; the pot and flowers are depicted in a child-like manner, as though made with chalk, while the log is more realistic with details in the bark and grain. Collins’ painting style may be inspired by neo-expressionists, a style of painting from the late 1970s. Neo-expressionism is seen as a revival of the expressionist movement where figures are painted clearly but with emotional intensity, using rough brushstrokes and vivid colors to respond to minimalist and conceptual art. Note the painter’s initials “KC” in the lower left corner and “13” in the lower right, perhaps meaning 2013.
