Charis Ammon, born in Dallas in 1992, earned her MFA in painting at the University of Houston. Her artworks have been exhibited at Art League Houston, Moody Center for the Arts, Lawndale Art Center, and more. Within Bush Intercontinental Airport is one of her oil paintings on canvas that measures six feet high and eight feet wide. The painting shows a street corner at night that is illuminated by the lights of a flower shop. Note how the painting plays with realism and expressionism, such as the working phone numbers of businesses, the double one-way signs, and the placement of poles, signs, and electrical boxes; however, the brushstrokes are visible, the background blurs into shapeless colors, and the fire hydrant is elongated. Specifically, this is the corner of Fannin Street and Wentworth Street near the Museum District of Houston, and the flower shop is still open. Ammon said: “I once lived on Fannin Street between the historic, 24-hour flower shops that lead to the Houston Medical Center, once known as Flower Row. The presence of a 24-hour flower shop speaks to the necessity to show care in material ways both day and night.”
