Frank Dobie

J. Frank Dobie was a writer and folklorist, a person who studies the traditions, beliefs, and practices of a culture like stories, jokes, rituals, crafts and more, born in Live Oak County, TX in Central Texas. He wrote several novels and books about rural Texas life, folk tales, and the open range, when cattle roamed freely regardless of land ownership in Texas. Dobie taught at various universities, such as the University of Texas (UT), Cambridge University, and more, and helped to save the Texas Longhorn from extinction. He received the Medal of Freedom from President Lyndon Johnson in 1964, four days before his death. The Dobie Paisano Fellowship for Texas writers at UT is housed at his former ranch near Austin, TX and J. Frank Dobie High School in Houston bears his name.
