George B. Meyer, Sr. Branch Houston Public Library

Before digital mediums were widely available, architects provided illustrations of designs to give their clients an idea of how the final building would appear. This architectural illustration is by architect Charles S. Chan, a member of the American Institute of Architects as shown by his signature on the bottom right, for the George B. Meyer, Sr. Branch Houston Public Library. Note the unique details that Chan gave this illustration: trees, flowers, people, breaks in the clouds, a car, etc. This library would open on July 25, 1962 at 5005 West Bellfort as the first branch to be opened in the Houston Public Library system with full shelves and 23,000 new books; however, the building would be closed after being damaged by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. This piece maintains important history. The architect, Chan, is the first man of Chinese descent to graduate from Rice University in 1942. Meyer, Sr. is a member of the Meyer family, who first arrived in Houston in 1867, that developed the Meyerland subdivision of Houston; in fact, the land the library is built on was given by the family.
