Hawks hold different meanings in various cultures, often seen as a messenger between the physical and spiritual worlds. Here is a sculpture of a hawk that measures eight-and-a-half inches high, three inches wide, and two-and-a-half inches deep and is made from cast silver, meaning that molten silver was poured into a mold and cooled. Note the smooth edges and simple shapes. Perhaps this is in the art deco-style, an aesthetic from the 1910s recognized for its sleek geometric forms that give feelings of luxury and glamor to inspire faith in social and technological progress. It seems the hawk is perched and standing guard while its eyes are hollow, allowing viewers to see through a single hole. This makes the viewer both a subject and participant in the hawk’s perspective. There are five editions of this hawk. The sculptor, Bill Steffy, was born in Illinois in 1933 and died in Houston in 2015 and known for his jewelry, designing pins with moonstone for three Apollo 9 astronauts.
