Henry Ward Beecher

Portraits are a genre of art that represent a specific person, often for their accomplishments, status, or role. In this case, an oil painting on panel from the 19th century, between 1801 – 1900, depicts Henry Ward Beecher. Beecher, born in 1813 and died in 1887, was an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and speaker known for supporting the abolition of slavery, women’s right to vote, and the prohibition of alcohol; one of his siblings was Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of the abolitionist novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1853). Forbes, born in 1839 and died in 1895, was an American landscape painter and etcher who gained fame during the American Civil War, between 1861 – 1865, for his detailed sketches of battlefields and combat.
