Kyle Olson is a mixed media artist based in Seguin, TX who works with found objects, 3-D renderings, and photogravure (a process for printing photographs on metal plates). He earned his MFA from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and is the department chair for visual arts at Texas Lutheran University. Here is one of his mixed media pieces, which is when an artwork is made with more than one medium or material, that takes the form of a violin. The body, neck, and scroll of the violin is made from carved wood while the tailpiece, bridge, finger board, and pegs are made with cast lead. Note how this violin has no strings; however, the violin was originally installed with chewed bubble gum as the strings. How does the absence of the gum change the artwork? What did it add? Olson said of his practice: “I try not to come at things from too intellectual a position while trying to make the work emotionally involving.”

Olson comentó sobre su práctica artística: “Intento no abordar las cosas desde una postura excesivamente intelectual, al tiempo que procuro lograr que la obra resulte emocionalmente cautivadora.”
