Hocus Pocus

Visual artist Shayne Murphy, born in Houston in 1981, earned an MFA in drawing and painting from the University of North Texas. He has been an artist-in-residence at Lawndale Art Center and featured his artwork at Texas A&M International University, Anya Tish Gallery, 500X Gallery, Art League Houston, and many more. Murphy is known for his surrealist drawings and paintings, often playing with realistic depictions of nature, animals, and people in fantastic settings and contexts. Surrealism refers to art that explores the creative potential of the unconscious mind, often resulting in the combination of the illogical and rational. Here is one of his surrealist paintings that shows a young man riding a bicycle with a paper airplane around it; the young man seems to be flying off a plain, white platform. Note how his red backpack is somehow both over his shoulders and the paper while his feet pedal nothing. Is this a dream? The title hints that this could be a result of magic. Murphy said: “My current work focuses on the creation of invented spaces that combine the real and imagined… Escapism and humankinds’ innate curiosity of the unknown constitute the conceptual foundations of my work.”
