About the Artwork:
HOL'D UP (2020)
by Michael Stevenson Jr.
Michael Stevenson Jr., born in Houston in 1987, creates artworks that are socially engaged, collaborative, and interdisciplinary, which is when a process or project combines multiple disciplines and/or practices. His artworks have been exhibited at the King School Museum of Contemporary Art, Columbia River Correctional Institution, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, and more. Here is a circular sculpture that measures three feet in diameter and 16 inches deep that is made of an acrylic convex mirror, acrylic paint, and steel cables. Specifically, it is a large convex mirror suspended vertically in the air with steel wire to appear floating or weightless. A convex mirror is bulged toward the center and causes its reflections to be wide-angled and enlarged, often warped into longer images; convex mirrors are often used for security in retail spaces since they can provide panoramic views around corners. Stevenson said: “The active suspension is key as it supports the ‘holding up’ of the imagined dimension beyond the visible black void. This void represents the possibilities of yet to be fathomed realities… unrestricted futures.”
