Homage To Gorky II (1971)

Dorothy Hood was a painter born in Bryan, Texas in 1918 and raised in Houston until traveling to Mexico in 1941, staying there for 20 years. In Mexico, Hood met many important artists from Latin America and Europe, such as being introduced by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda to Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco who mentored her in Mexico City. She returned to Houston in 1961, and her papers are held at the University of Houston Library Special Collections. This piece, titled “Homage to Gorky II,” is an abstract painting, which is when artists move away from reality to play with shapes and colors. It features various cloud-like shapes of different shades of brown, blue, red, and black on a brown background. Note how Hood creates depth and texture through white and black shading. Is this a topographic map of a region with the brown as mountains and the blue being lakes? The title may refer to Arshile Gorky, an Armenian American painter whose work was influential in the Abstract Expressionism art movement. Hood has other homages to Gorky, the first homage being at the Whitney Museum, as well as other artists, such as Henri Matisse, Constantin Brancusi, and Peter Voulkos.
